Product Description

Ever since the first electric waffle maker was released a little over 100 years ago, waffles have been a staple at the breakfast table and it’s easy to see why. An electric waffle maker like this one, takes all the guesswork out of waffle making. You simply wait for it to heat up, turn the dial, then just wait for it to cook. The waffle maker beeps at each step to let you know when to pour the batter or when your waffle is ready to eat. A high-tech steam-release system wicks away excess moisture from the batter, so your waffles get crispy on the outside, but remain fluffy on the inside. Once you’re done, the nonstick surface is super easy to clean and since it’s so compact, it can store vertically.

Waffle House style waffles - All Clad vs Cuisinart vs Krups
4 Stars
Waffle House style waffles - All Clad vs Cuisinart vs Krups
TLDR; slow and expensive but pretty close to Waffle House waffles. In pursuit of replicating the perfect Waffle House waffles at home, we identified a few critical components: the recipe (half-and-half + buttermilk, along with butter + shortening, are key), the waffle style (thin / American style, with lots of little syrup holes -- WH has 7 on the inner edges of each quarter), waffle texture (crispy on the outside, tender on the inside), and syrup (WH Twitter indicates that they source their branded syrup from Blackburn in Texas -- we ordered this from Amazon, but my family seems to think the original Blackburn syrup is NOT the right one, so we'll have to keep exploring on that front). The actual WH iron is the Wells WB-1E, which looks to be running well over a thousand dollars ... so we were hoping to be able to get close with a consumer-level iron. After some research, the best available options seem to be this All-Clad Stainless Steel Classic Round Waffle Maker, the Breville BWM520XL No-Mess Waffle Maker (roughly the same price), and the Cuisinart Classic Waffle Maker (at 1/5 the cost). The All Clad seemed to get slightly better reviews than the Breville across customer reviews and waffle iron roundups, so I started with that. I also picked up the Cuisinart locally to see how well the premium waffle iron would outperform a truly budget option. I figured I'd also test against the Krups 4-slice Belgian Waffle Maker that has been our family's go-to (before we realized how much the waffle style mattered!). I wasn't able to find reviews that gave me good visual comparisons of these waffle makers and the waffles they produced, so I'm attaching plenty of photos here. These were our results:All-Clad: Really nice build quality and appealing appearance. Cooked pretty evenly and had a nice little moat to catch slight overfill; we only had actual overflow once with this iron. It was significantly slower than the Cuisinart but significantly faster than the Krups. It had the most/smallest holes of the three waffle irons. It was (unsurprisingly) thinner than the Krups Belgian waffles but thicker than the Cuisinart. We started the doneness setting at 3 but ultimately had to go up to 6 (of 7) to get to a nice golden brown. This ultimately produced the best waffles of the three (and is easily the most attractive), but it took some trial-and-error to figure it out. The biggest downsides with this one are definitely speed and price point. 2 of 6 family members preferred this one (3 had no preference between All-Clad and Cuisinart).Cuisinart: Honestly, this is an unexpectedly good buy, dollar-for-dollar. It cranked out nice, thin waffles with great texture, and it cooked quickly. Downsides - the build feels pretty cheap/flimsy, it was unforgiving with overflow (so pretty messy on the whole), and there is neither a visible timer nor audible indicator to know when it's done, so you really have to keep your eye on it for the green "ready" light (as we had a production line going, we missed - and burned - a few). Doneness at "4" on the Cuisinart was a bit darker than the "6" doneness on the All-Clad. The holes were not quite as small as that of the All-Clad, but the thinness was on point. 1 of 6 family members preferred this one (3 had no preference between All-Clad and Cuisinart).Krups: It's a Belgian waffle iron, so we didn't have any illusions about it really emulating WH waffles, but we still wanted to have it in the mix to compare how much the waffle style/thickness/holes ultimately mattered, since we'd be using the same "Waffle House" batter in all of them. The verdict among our six family members was conclusive - strong preference for the round, thinner, smaller-holed waffles. That said, the Krups waffle iron IS great for a crowd. The 1/4 square is substantial (taking about the same amount of batter as the full rounds of the Cuisinart and All-Clad), and though it probably took twice as long to cook as the All-Clad, it's putting out four nice-sized waffles at a time. I'd say it cooked the most evenly, though it did have more tendency to overflow than the All-Clad. As a Belgian waffle maker, it was naturally the deepest (though I was expecting a more dramatic difference; waffle height pics are included for comparison), and it had fewer and bigger holes. Ultimately, while this is a consistent and reliable waffle iron, we're retiring this one from our regular waffle night rotation unless we're cooking for a larger group.OVERALL: I really have no complaints about the All-Clad waffle maker, and I'm glad that I got it; I'm just not sure that its appearance (so pretty), moat (pretty clean altogether), and beep (which feels like it SHOULD be a baseline feature) make it 5x better than the Cuisinart, dollar for dollar. We do like to have three waffle irons going at a time for our family of six, and I'm conflicted on whether to just buy another Cuisinart (fast, cheap, and delicious - but definitely high maintenance to monitor and clean up) or to bring the Breville No-Mess waffle iron into the mix (looks like it might be the thinnest of all?) to really make this a comprehensive comparison.

I don't have much basis for comparison. My only other waffle maker cost $20, marked down to $10. It took a long time to heat up, the waffles were unevenly cooked, and there was no indicator to show that the waffles were ready -- you were supposed to watch to see that there was no steam coming out. In spite of these limitations, we decided we liked waffles enough, and made them often enough, to justify the extra expense of the All-Clad. This waffle maker overcomes the primary deficiencies of the first machine. It heats up quickly, makes waffles that are evenly cooked on both sides, and uniformly cooked across the surface. The waffles cook quickly, and there is a bell (or something) that rings when the waffle is ready. There is a dial that can be set to sound the alert based on your preference for lighter or darker. It has been completely reliable over about 8 months of moderate use.

I have no idea what the inner workings are like, but the waffle iron is heavy and feels extremely solid. It has been easy to clean, with the usual caveats that it can't be immersed and I presume that eventually the non-stick coating will wear off.

From my viewpoint there are two deficiencies, both fairly minor The alert to say that the waffles are ready is high pitched and soft. Since generally develop a high frequency hearing loss with age, many of us have to devote full attention to the waffle maker and can't have a radio in the background or carry on a conversation -- we have to listen for thge alarm. Also, although the waffle maker is designed so that the cord can be wound around the base during storage, there is no clip for the cord, so it may be necessary to resort to a twist closure or rubber band.

Other than a waffle maker with a larger surface, or one of the waffle makers that can make two waffles at the same time, I suspect this is about as good as it gets.

May 2020 update: Still going strong since July 2015. Love this waffle iron. Still works great. Consistent results.
Only one problem is somehow the lid lock on the right side stopped working. It's only a problem when it's being stored, not used for cooking and to remedy the problem I place a kitchen washcloth between the plates. Not pretty but it's stored in the pantry. Today it "locked" as I forgot to put the cloth between the plates when I last used it and I could not get the lid opened. Almost ordered a new one. Lifting it up it fell open :-). So being cheap and wanting to use this until it dies I avoided buying a new one!

Previous review when purchased originally: I bought this to replace a very old waffle maker and I wanted a good quality replacement. I am very pleased with the quality and performance of the All Clad Waffle maker. It's heavy duty, the waffle plates are excellent quality. The waffles release beautifully, no sticking. I found for me, comparing this to my older waffle iron, cooking the waffles on the higher temp (7) gave me the crisp texture we like. Regarding the locks on either side of the unit, I had no issues with those until more recent years (see update from May 2020). I did notice when using it the waffle iron does get hot on the top and sides (that is to be expected), those locks are also hot to the touch and I use a small pot holder. The unit cleans up easily.

I am very happy with my purchase and think this will last many years. I highly recommend it.
P.S. I bought this through Amazon deals to save a few bucks and the unit appeared brand new, only the box was banged up. Great buy....

Waffle irons are all pretty simple the way they are made and most all of them do a good job making waffles. This All-Clad waffle maker is special to me because it reminds me of the old square Sunbeam waffle maker our family had when I was just a kid. I especially like the size of this one and with its specially made feet; it lays flat on the counter or stands upright against the wall. Most important of all, a novice (and I do mean novice!) cook like me, waffles come out perfectly every time. It's easy to regulate the temperature, although I only had to pretty much set it and just leave it at the same setting. That's one of the things that makes using it so easy to get those perfect waffles every time. I also like the size of the round waffles, because they fit perfectly on the plate. As you might expect from All-Clad, this well-constructed waffle maker is of heavy steel with a non-stick waffle surface. I know that I will pass this on in the family because it will last forever!

I love this regular, non stick waffle maker by All - Clad. The outside is stainless steel and the non stick waffle plates are super easy to clean, just a wipe with a damp cloth and you're done. The unit heats up quick and beeps when it reaches your desired temperature which you can set from 1-7. It also beeps when the waffles are done so you no longer have to guess and open the lid to check. I set the temperature dial to 5 and the waffles turned out perfectly cooked for my family. They loved them! This waffle maker is on the more expensive side but you do get what you pay for. I am hoping that this waffle maker lasts years. Just buy it, you'll love it too.
